    The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings is an amenity society founded by William Morris, Philip Webb and others, in 1877; to oppose what they saw as destructive 'restoration' of ancient buildings then occurring in Victorian England; 'ancient' being used in the wider sense of 'very old' rather than the more usual modern one of 'pre-medieval'.

It is tasked with protecting the historic environment of England by preserving and listing historic buildings, scheduling ancient monuments, registering historic Parks and Gardens and by advising central and local government.

  • IHBC

    The Institute of Historic Building Conservation is a professional body in the United Kingdom. It was formed as a charitable trust company in 1997 by members of the former Association of Conservation Officers. The object was to widen the scope of the profession from those mainly concerned with the statutory regulation of the historic environment to all those who practice professionally in historic and built environment conservation.

  • Devon Buildings Group

    The Devon Buildings Group was established in 1986. Its aim is to encourage awareness of all aspects of the wealth of historic buildings in Devon and to take an active part in their preservation.

  • Devon Earth Building Association

    The Devon Earth Building Association was formed in 1991 to sustain the ancient and traditional practice of building in earth or ‘cob’ in the South-West of England. The Association supports the conservation of existing cob buildings by developing and promoting appropriate techniques for their repair and maintenance, and encourages the use of cob for new building.
